The Arrogant Deer
By: Mrs. Dian Anggraini
There was once lived a deer who live
alone because no one wanted to live with him. He was very arrogant and
resentful.
One day while walking around a lake,
he saw a turtle. He seemed agitated, wondering around the area. “Turtle, what
are you doing here?” he asked.
“I’m looking for something to eat.”
He answered
“Well, you should go. This is my
territory. You are on my land. You can’t look for food on my land.” He spoke.
“hah…your land I don’t think so.
There is not such a thing as your land. The land belongs to whomever wants to
live here and there is not ownership of this land,” said Turtle.
“O...Little Turtle, you’ve been in
the sea so long, Lion the King has given this land to me. You have no place
here. I don’t like anyone disturbing me,” he said.
“I don’t believe you, Deer. Even
though, you are bigger than me, I’m not afraid of you. Everyone has the right
to find their food anywhere in this land. I will speak about this to the King.”
Turtle answered.
“Talk all you want little creature,
just go and talk to the King. Let’s see who’s right.” Deer said.
Hearing this, Turtle was determined
to find Lion the King. He believed any animal has the right to find food
anywhere they want.
The next day, Lion the King, sat on a
high stone, was facing the Deer and the Turtle.
“Deer, I heard you are being arrogant
again,” Lion spoke
“My King, I’ve never bother anyone.
All of sudden, he appeared around me. He said he was searching for food. My
King, I believed this is my land. No one but me may find food here,” he said.
“Deer, as far as the eye can see this
place belongs to us all. As for you Turtle, you shouldn’t disturb other,” Lion
spoke.
“My King, I did not bother him. I was
looking for food there, when he came and talked arrogantly. This is a huge
place. He can’t act as if it belongs only to him,” Turtle spoke.
“My dear friends, listen very
carefully, this place is ours. Sharing is part of our daily lives. Deer, I let
you stay far here because other animals can’t stand your arrogancy. You need to
start thinking that there are other people around you. You will need other
people, if you are sick and can’t get food who’s going to take of you. As for
you Turtle, being respectful is good. Specially to those are there before you,”
Lion spoke.
“Yes, my King. You are right. I’m
sorry Deer.” Said Deer.
“My King, I have lived here for a
long time, can I put fence around it?” He asked.
“Absolutely not, all animals are free
to roam here or around the lake. What you asked is impossible, if you don’t
like to what I say it means you challenge me.” Lion said
“My King, let me challenge him in
running race.” Turtle said.
“All right both of you will have
race, whoever wins I will grant whatever he wants. I’ll be the judge for the
race” Lion said. Deer and Turtle agreed, so they prepared themselves to have
the race.
They agreed that Turtle would run
first half the route the Deer began his run. Deer felt confident, he let Turtle
run more than half the route. But then he lost the race, because Turtle arrived
at the finish line faster. Turtle ran as fast as he could, did not take a rest.
It was only one meter left when he heard Deer behind him. He stumbled luckily
it was downhill, so he rolled his body to the finish line. (12/03/25).
